Ways to give back this holiday season
When the weather turns colder and I begin making holiday plans, shopping for the kid’s Christmas gifts, or deciding what we will eat for Christmas Eve, I always feel a tiny bit of guilt when it comes to how much we have to celebrate. I think of those who may be without a refrigerator full of food, or those who aren’t able to travel to be with their loved ones. This year I’m thinking about children whose parents so desperately want to provide them with a magical day, but are having trouble making ends meet. I know I’m not the only one looking to give back, so I wanted to create a handy list with some of the opportunities available this holiday season.
My family decided we would purchase gifts for the Ethel Beaver Fund, so that children and teens in local detention centers could have gifts to open on Christmas morning. Whether it’s time you have to give, money, or even a warm meal for those in need, I hope you will find an option here that works for you!
Donate to the Ethel Beaver Fund to support children and adolescents in the care of Centre County Children & Youth Services.
Gather your friends (and their kids!) to create Jared Boxes. If your child has ever landed in the hospital, you know how wonderful these can be. They’re super fun and easy to make too!
Drop off groceries to the State College Food Bank. Here is a list of the most needed items as of 11/14/23.
Provide a meal for those without permanent housing at Out of the Cold.
Ring the bell for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign!
Sponsor a child in need by buying them Christmas gifts with A Christmas Wish Centre County.
Donate to Centre Safe. Bus tokens, gift cards, small household appliances, cleaning supplies and more. Here is a list of items accepted.
Give blood at a local American Red Cross Blood Drive. There are so many opportunities over the next few weeks. Search for locations and times, then schedule an appointment here!
